Your Pet and Supplements

Supplements are a growing segment in the pet marketplace, mirroring the popularity of human consumption of supplements. Many producers of pet foods and pet treats are adding supplements to their recipes. This is something that pet owners need to be aware of especially if they are already giving their pet supplements on a regular basis. Not all supplements are innocuous and, as with human supplements, if taken in too high a dose could have the potential to cause side effects. To be an informed consumer, it is advised that you do some basic research into supplements or food containing supplements that you decide to provide to your pet. Many supplements do have beneficial properties and it is important that your pet receives the proper vitamins and minerals in their diet. However, some supplements are questionable. One example is grapefruit seed extract. Though it sounds natural enough, because of the intense chemical processing it goes through the USDA Natural Organic Program has defined this as a chemical compound and it is not permitted in organic foods. In fact it is not usually recommended for consumption, but used mainly in cosmetics and topical treatments.
Bark Street Bistro uses only vitamin E (mixed tocopherals)in their recipes and in very low amounts. This is used as a natural preservative.
All of the ingredients used to make your pet treats at Bark Street Bistro are all natural and/or organic and you can be assured that you are not getting any questionable or mystery ingredients in your gourmet natural organic dog treats.

Snow much fun
from the desk of Hank Huskey

Wow, it's getting white outside - if you happen to live north of Florida. The weather reports are showing snow all over the place so let's go out and hit the drifts.
Most dogs love to romp in the snow along with their hardy humans. Their humans however need to remember although dogs enjoy the outdoors you do need to use some common sense. If it too cold for people to be outside for any length of time, the same goes for our four legged buddies. Paws, noses, tails, and ears can be frostbitten. Also, we've all seen the scary videos on TV of poor hapless animals falling through thin ice. Keep your dog within site and/or leashed when near iced-over ponds, lakes and streams or when not supervised.
After coming in from the cold check their feet and remove any large ice chunks from toe pads. If your dog is white or very light in color, putting a bright vest on them to make them more visible may be a good idea. If your dog has very little fur or is in ill health, a warm sweater is advisable if you're going to be outside more than a few minutes. So have fun, use common sense and go toss some snowballs around with your buddy.
